Sharing a gift

Robert comes from a family of five kids. His mother’s HIV infection caused
her medical expenses to be so high that she was unable to pay for house
rent. She ended up sleeping on the street with Robert. The other children
were put in an orphanage. A good Samaritan allowed her and Robert to sleep
in a church. We taught her to make beads and slowly she regained her
strength. She got her children back, pays for rent and has enough to eat.
The children went to school this week.
On Robert’s birthday he wanted to express his thankfulness for what Caring
Hands has done for him by giving us a small box of cookies with the
following note:

Dear Aunt Milla,
Thank you for everything you have done for us.
Today is my Birthday and I want to share what I have with you on this day.
It is a packet of something, don’t mind just take it. But share it with your
husband, and my best friend Aulla [Ulla]. I don’t know the spelling of your
names but don’t mind.

Lahjan jakaminen

Robertin perheessä on viisi lasta. Hänen äitinsä hiv-infektio aiheutti
korkeita terveydenhuollollisia kuluja, mistä johtuen he eivät kyenneet
maksamaan vuokrakuluja. Äiti ja Robert joutuivat nukkumaan kadulla. Toiset
lapset laitettiin orpokotiin. Hyväsydämminen lähimmäinen johdatti äidin ja
pojan saamaan yösijan kirkossa. Opetettuamme Robertin äidin tekemään koruja
paperihelmistä, hänen voimansa palasivat vähitellen. Hän sai lapsensa
takaisin, hän pysystyy maksamaan vuokransa ja heillä on ruokaa syödäkseen.
Tällä viikolla lapset ovat palanneet kouluun. Syntymäpäivänään Robert halusi
osoittaa kiitollisuuttaan, siitä mitä Caring Hands on tehnyt hänelle
antamalla pienen paketin pipareja ja pikku lappusen, jossa luki:

“ Rakas Milla- täti!
Kiitos kaikesta, mitä olet tehnyt meille. Tänään on minun syntymäpäiväni ja
haluan jakaa sinun kanssasi, sitä mitä minulla on tänään. Älä välitä vaikka
se on vain pikku paketti-ota se silti. Voit jakaa sen miehesi ja minun
parhaimman ystäväni Aullan (Ullan) kanssa. Äläkä välitä, vaikken tiedä,
kuinka nuo nimet kirjoitetaan!

Four years ago we took care of baby Babirye for two months at our home. When she was five months old, her mother died from AIDS. Babirye tested positive for HIV and was very sick, at the brink of death. The doctors started her on ARVs and we helped the family get a new home. At the end of February, 2009 we received the news that her father Salonko had died of AIDS.  Now all the kids are taken care of by the grandmother and the relatives. Babirye traveled with her grandmother to greet us. During the whole bus trip to Kampala she sang a song in the Ankole language:: ”Ayi Yesu, oje ompeke ayi mugongo!” (“Please my Jesus, carry me on your back!”) The heavenly Father has given Babirye health for the last four years. We are thankful for this gift from God. The piggy back ride continues ….

On 16.04.2009 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Fida International and Caring Hands. Caring Hands was also invited to attend the summer Pentecostal conference in Keuru, Finland during mid-summer to sell our products and speak about our work. There will be two Ugandan Caring Hands ladies with us. We are thankful for this honor. Fida’s Executive Director, Rauno Mikkonen wrote the following message: “Fida’s board unanimously ratified the Memorandum of Understanding between Caring Hands and Fida International at the board meeting held on 13.5.2009.”

On May 14th and 15th, 2009, received two groups of third grade kids from Kampala International School. They had been taught about the environment of the use of recycled materials. They had read about Caring Hands in a local magazine and contacted us and wanted to see how beads are made from recycled paper. Each student proudly displayed the beads they had made after their three hour visit.

In 2008, after careful consideration, we invested a large sum of money to fulfill one orphan’s dream of becoming a pilot. We felt that this was a person we should invest in. Patrick got his pilot’s license (he still dreams of getting his commercial pilot’s license). At the school Patrick got to know one of his fellow students who was touched by his story. The fellow student came with his fiancé to see Caring Hands. They encouraged us to apply for a grant from USAID. We signed the agreement on 22.05.2009. The grant will be used to help orphans and vulnerable children. The grant is almost twice as large as what we invested in Patrick’s license. Without Patrick’s contact, we would not have known of the whole program. Our investment brought this blessing.

Paulo is doing well. He is going to a real school! He has never been able to go to school because of his illness (he is HIV positive). He was not strong enough to walk to school. “I have been practicing walking and am now able to walk the 2 kms.” Paulo told us when we visited him. For the last two years we have paid a teacher to teach Paulo. Now that he is better, he wants to go to school with other kids. Paulo will also be on the cover of the new book Towards an HIV and AIDS Competent Church, which will be published later this year.

Neljä vuotta sitten hoidimme Babirye-vauvaa parin kuukauden ajan kotonamme. 5kk vanhana hänen äitinsä kuoli Aidsiin. Babirye oli hyvin sairas ja lähellä kuolemaa; hänet testattiin myös Hiv-positiiviseksi. Lääkärit aloittivat ARV-lääkityksen, autoimme hänen koko perhettään antamalla heille uuden kodin. Saimme viestin helmikuun lopulla, että hänen isänsä Salonko oli kuollut Aidsiin. Nyt kaikki sisarukset ovat mummon ja sukulaisten huollettavina. Babirye matkusti mummonsa kanssa meitä tervehtimään. Koko pitkän linja-automatkan hän oli laulanut ankole heimon kielellä: ”Ayi Yesu,oje ompeke ayi mugongo! Minun Jeesukseni, kannathan minua selässäsi!” Taivaan Isämme on antanut Babiryelle terveitä päiviä viimeisen neljän vuoden aikana. Olemme kiitollisia Babiryen elämästä, joka on lahja Jumalalta. Reppuselkämatka jatkuu…

16.04.2009 allekirjoitettiin yhteistyösopomus Fida Internationalin ja Caring Handsin välillä. Caring Hands sai myös kutsun tulla helluntaiherätyksen kesäkonferenssiin Keuruulle ensi juhannuksena myymään tuotteitamme ja esittelemään toimintaamme. Mukaamme on myös kutsuttu kaksi ugandalaista Caring Handsiin kuuluvaa naista. Olemme kiitollisia näistä kunnianosoituksista.Fidan toiminnanjohtajalta Rauno Mikkoselta tuli seuraava viesti: ”Fidan hallitus hyväksyi yksimielisesti Caring Handsin ja Fida Internationalin välisen yhteistyösopimuksen eli ratifioi sen kokouksessaan 13.5.2009. ”

14-15.05.2009 saimme Kampalan kansainväliseltä koululta (KISU) kaksi ryhmää kolmasluokkalaisia, joille oli hiljattain koulussa opetettu luonnonsuojelua ja kierrätysmateriaalien käyttöä. Opettajan luettua paikallisesta lehdestä artikkelin Caring Handsin toiminnasta, he ottivat yhteyttä nähdäkseen käytännössä, kuinka paperihelmiä tehdään. Jokaisella heistä komeili itsetehdyt helmet kaulassa kolmen tunnin vieralun jälkeen.

2008 investoimme pitkän harkinnan jälkeen suuren summan yhden orvon unelman toteuttamiseen tulla lentäjäksi. Koimme, että tähän poikaan pitää satsata. Patrick sai lentolupakirjan ja nyt hänen tavoitteenaan on tulla liikennelentäjäksi. Patrick tutustui toiseen lentäjäoppilaaseen, joka oli kosketettu Patrickin elämäntarinasta. Tapaaminen CH:n kanssa järjestyi ja kihlattunsa kanssa he rohkaisivat meitä tekemään anomuksen HIPS/USAID ohjelmaan. 22.05.2009 allekirjoitimme sopimuksen HIPS/USAIDin kanssa, joka tukee organisaatioita, jotka auttavat orpoja ja hädänalaisia lapsia. Lahjoitus on melkein kaksi kertaa suurempi, kuin mitä sijoitimme Patrickin kouluttamiseen. Ilman Patrickin kontaktia, emme olisi tietäneet koko ohjelmasta. Sijoituksemme toi siunauksen.

Paulo voi hyvin. Hän lähtee oikeaan kouluun! Koko elämänsä aikana hän ei ole sairautensa (Hiv-positiivinen) tähden jaksanut kävellä kouluun. ”Olen harjoitellut kävelemistä ja pystyn kävelemään koululle noin 2km”,  kertoi Paulo meille viime vierailumme aikana. Pari viimeistä vuotta olemme kustantaneet kotiopettajan Paulolle. Nyt hänen terveytensä on parempi ja hän haluaa mennä tavalliseen kouluun muiden lasten joukkoon.  Paulon kuva komeilee uuden kirjan kansikuvassa:”TOWARDS HIV AND AIDS COMPETANT CHURCH”, joka ilmestyy myöhemmin tänä vuonna.

JOY AND TEARS OF SORROW – THE LIFE OF CARING HANDS

Patrick the pilot has flown to Canada. Dreams do come true!

Nine years ago Patrick came to Uganda as a refugee with his family. The dreams of a young boy to become a pilot came true through the help of Caring Hands. Now a new world has opened to Patrick – as a refugee in Canada. On August 11th he shook the red African dust from his feet, but not from his heart, as he, his mother and two brothers flew to Halifax. It is always sad when a friend and colleague leaves, but the whole team from Caring Hands rejoices with Patrick – the future commercial pilot.

Positive? When a HIV test is positive, it is difficult to find anything positive about it.

Thirty-four year old Jacqline is a well-educated, single, loving mother of three children, living in poverty. She took her children for HIV testing. The test for all three, six-year old Derrick, three-year old Jeremiah, and one-year old Naome Milla were positive. The results shook everyone. Tears were shed; the feeling was grave. Why? How can we go on from here? Jacqline was not one of our bead makers, but knows how to make them. So, now she is part of the Caring Hands group.

Caring Hands supports! As a group, a team, we are strong!

In the case of Jacqline, many things came to mind and a great idea was born for a peer support group. This gave birth to the Suubi (Luganda for “hope”) support group.

The Suubi support group gets together on Fridays after the literacy training. The purpose of the gathering is to give peer support for those who are HIV positive or those personally affected by HIV in one way or another. The group has been together twice. Questions and answers flew back and forth. It has been truly successful and we have felt it has been necessary.

Adult Literacy Program. A year on – now we know how to read and write!

On Friday August 14th a year of studies at Caring Hands was accomplished. Reports and awards were handed out to those who had the best achievements and those who were most enthusiastic. Now there is a moment reprieve for the teachers and students before we start the next semester. This is how we empower through letters and numbers!

Apila and Ananso moved from a mud hut into a new home. The thousand fold joy of ten!

A new week began on August 3, 2009. In the morning a sad looking woman, Apila Pauline awaited us. She is the sister of Anaso Evelyn, one of the bead makers. She came to ask for work. Apila and Anaso live together with eight children in a small mud hut in Kinawataka (a suburb of Kampala). The house is so bad that we would not even keep animals in. The roof leaks, daylight streams through the walls, and everything is covered in dirt and mud. The family’s source of income was the money Ananso made from making beads. The money was not enough for food, nor for anything else. Now Apila is helping out at Caring Hands and earning a salary. Caring Hands helped her move the whole family into a new place to live with adjacent rooms.

August 20th was a beautiful morning. The sisters and children had no idea what type of “Christmas” awaited them that day. Around noon, two vehicles pulled up loaded with ten beds, mattresses, blankets, pillows, mosquito nets, new plates, cups and many other things. The quiet prayers, tears of joy and thankfulness soon changed into shouts of joy when the ten member family understood that for the first time in their life, each one was going to sleep in their own bed in their new home.

The ball rolls on Saturdays!  Women owning plots!

The project begun with the help of USAID is continuing well. We are playing football (soccer) in three different places in Kampala. The teams are formed and the kids are enthusiastic. Great!

Caring Hands has given out lots of money in the form of charity and loans. Many ladies have bought their own plots where they will soon build their own houses. A beautifully painted  house with a garden will guarantee better security for the children when the parents decease.

It is unbelievable what all we can achieve when the money made from beads is combined with team work and love. Thanks.


ILON JA SURUN KYYNELEITÄ – CARING HANDS ELÄMÄÄ

Pilotti Patrick lensi Kanadaan! Unelmat toteutuvat!

9 vuotta sitten Patrick tuli Ugandaan pakolaisena perheensä kanssa. Pienen pojan unelma pilotin ammatista toteutui Caring Handsin avustuksella ja nyt Patrickille on avautunut uusi maailma, elämä pakolaisena Kanadassa.  11.8. hän karisti Afrikan punaiset tomut jaloistaan, muttei koskaan sydämestään, ja lensi äitinsä ja kahden veljensä kanssa Halifaxiin. On aina surullista kun ystävä ja työtoveri lähtee, mutta koko Caring Hands Tiimi iloitsee Patrickin – tulevan liikennelentäjän – puolesta!

Positiivistako? Kun HIV-testin tulos on positiivinen, siitä on todellisuudessa hankala löytää mitään positiivista...

34-vuotias Jacqline, kolmen lapsen yksinhuoltaja äiti, hyvin koulutettu, mutta köyhyydessä elävä rakastava ja kaunis nainen vei lapsensa HIV-testiin. Tulos kaikkien kolmen; Derrick 6 vuotta, Jeremiah 3 vuotta ja Naome Milla 1 vuotta, kohdalla oli positiivinen. Tieto järkytti kaikkia, kyyneleet valuivat, tunnelma oli raskas. Miksi? Miten tästä voi jatkaa? Jacqline ei ole helmentekijä, mutta taitaa sen hyvin, joten Caring Hands otti hänet mukaan ryhmään.

Caring Hands tukee! Ryhmänä, tiiminä olemme vahvoja!

Jacqlinen tapauksen jälkeen moni asia tuli mieleen ja siitä poiki hieno ajatus vertaistukiryhmästä ja niin sai alkunsa SUUBI-GROUP, Toivo-Ryhmä.

SUUBI-GROUP kokoontuu perjantaisin koulun jälkeen ja ryhmän tarkoitus on antaa vertaistukea HIV-positiivisille tai HIV-positiivisten kanssa eläville, heitä auttaville henkilöille. Takana on nyt kaksi kokoontumista, kysymykset ja vastaukset lentelivät ilmassa ja ryhmä on ollut todella menestys.. Se koetaan tarpeelliseksi.

Adults Literacy Program. Vuosi takana – luku- ja kirjoitustaito hallussa!

Perjantaina 14.8. tuli vuosi täyteen opintoja Caring Hands koulussa. Todistukset sekä ”hymytyttö patsaat” jaettiin parhaiten menestyneille ja innostuneimmille. Nyt saa opettajat ja oppilaat hetken hengähtää kunnes taas uusi lukukausi alkaa. Näin voimaannutaan aakkosin ja numeroin!

Apila ja Ananso, mutamajasta uuteen kotiin. Kymmenen ihmisen tuhatkertainen ilo!

3.8.2009 alkoi uusi viikko ja aamulla meitä odotti toimistolla surullisen näköinen nainen, Apila Pauline. Hän on helmentekijä Anaso Evelynin sisar ja tuli kysymään töitä. 10 henkinen perhe, siskokset ja 8 lasta, asuttaa pientä mutamajaa Kampalan Kinawatakassa, kodissa johon me emme edes eläimiämme majoittaisi. Katto vuotaa, seinistä loistaa päivänvalo läpi ja kaikki on lian ja mudan peitossa. Perhe hankkii elantonsa Ananson hankkimilla helmirahoilla. Raha ei riitä ruokaan eikä oikein mihinkään. Nyt Apila auttaa Caring Handsillä, saa palkkaa ja Caring Hands auttoi perheitä muuttamaan uuteen kotiin, vierekkäisiin huoneisiin.

Elokuinen torstaiaamu 20. päivä nousi kauniina, eikä siskoksilla lapsineen ollut tietoakaan millainen ”Joulu” heitä odottaisi tänään. Puolen päivän aikaan toimiston pihaan porhalsi 2 autoa, lastinaan KYMMENEN sänkyä, patjaa, peittoa, tyynyä… moskiittoverkot, uudet ruoka-astiat ja paljon muuta. Hiljaiset rukoukset, onnenkyyneleet ja kiitoksen sanat vaihtuivat pian riemun kiljahduksiin, kun kymmenhenkinen perhe ymmärsi, että he nukkuisivat seuraavaan yön uudessa kodissaan ja jokainen omassa sängyssä ensimmäistä kertaa elämässään!

Pallo pyörii lauantaisin!  Naisista tontinomistajia!

USaid:n kanssa aloitettu projekti jatkuu hienosti. Palloa pelataan joka lauantai jo kolmessa paikassa Kampalassa. Joukkueet alkavat olla hyvin koossa ja lapset innoissaan. Hienoa!

Viimeisen parin viikon aikana on Caring Hands jakanut paljon rahaa, niin lainojen kuin hyväntekeväisyyden nimissä. Moni nainen on ostanut palan maata, johon lähitulevaisuudessa alkaa rakentumaan oma talo. Punainen tupa ja perunamaa takaa paremman turvan lapsille vanhempien menehtyessä.

On uskomatonta nähdä mitä kaikkea saadaan aikaan, kun yhdistetään helmistä saadut rahat ja rakkaudella tehty tiimityö! KIITOS!

The past weeks news from Caring Hands / Caring Hands uutisia kuluneilta viikoilta

In partnership with USAID we began a football (soccer) program for orphans on Saturday July 25th.

In the front yard of a church in Mutungo, a large group of enthusiastic football players awaited our arrival. There were about 130 kids aged 3-18. It was great to see the girls involved also.

They were divided into groups according to their ages. This produced animated play and for the youngest we improvised with songs and other games.

The children and adults were eager and it will be great to follow it up next Saturday.

The good fortune of Nakakawa Rose’s family.

Saturday the 25th was a great day for Nakakawa Rose’s five member family. About 2 months ago, Caring Hands helped the family move from a wood shack into nicer, roomier accommodations. Now they received a large bunk bed, linen, mattresses, food, and lastly (but not least), love. The four daughters and the mother were full of thankfulness and joy.

After a long illness, Rose Mary is slowly recovering and is able to return to her old business of selling vegetables, fruits and banana leaves.

We are still making beads; the designs are developing. Help is seen in little things.

Caring Hands is not standing still. There is no lack of imagination among the ladies and their families. The beads can be seen even in Nazziva Prossy’s shoes.

A year ago, baby Loice was a very sick girl. Through the assistance of Caring Hands, she has recovered and is growing into a robust little lady. This is noticeable when comparing a photo of the girl a year ago and now.

This is how it is here in Uganda.


USAID:n kanssa aloitettu orpoja avustava projekti pyörähti mukavasti käyntiin jalkapalloilun muodossa 25.7. lauantaina.

Mutungossa sijaitsevan kirkon etupihalle kokoontui suuri joukko innokkaita jalkapalloilijoita meidän saapuessamme paikalle. Lapsia riitti liki 130 ja ikäjakauma liikkui 3-18 välillä ja mikä ilahduttavaa jalkapallo sai liikkeelle myös tytöt!

Eri-ikäisiin lapsiin jaetuissa ryhmissä tapahtuma eteni pienestä pallottelusta hurjiin pelitilanteisiin ja ihan pienimmille oli tarjolla improvisoitua laulu- ja leikkitoimintaa.

Lapset ja aikuiset olivat innoissaan ja tästä on hyvä jatkaa tulevina lauantai-iltapäivinä.

Nakakawa Rose Maryn perheen onni.

Lauantai 25.7. oli suuri päivä myös Nakakawa Rose Maryn 5 henkiselle perheelle. Noin 2 kuukautta sitten uuteen kotiin lautahökkelistä perheensä kanssa muuttanut Rose Mary sai tuntea Caring Handsin auttavat kädet hyvin konkreettisesti ison kerrossängyn, liinavaatteiden, patjojen, ruoka-avustuksen sekä viimeisenä, mutta ei vähäisempänä, lähimmäisen rakkauden muodossa. Neljä tytärtä ja äiti olivat niin täynnä kiitollisuutta ja iloa!

Pitkään hyvin hyvin sairaana ollut Rose Mary palailee nyt pikkuhiljaa oman bisneksensä pariin myymään vihanneksia, hedelmiä ja banaaninlehtiä.

Helmiä rullataan, mallit kehittyy! Apu näkyy pienissä!

Caring Hands ei pysähdy paikoilleen! Helmentekijä naisilta ja heidän perheiltään ei puutu mielikuvitusta! Paperihelmet löysivät paikkansa myös Nazziva Prossyn kengissä.

Baby Loice oli vuosi sitten tavattoman sairas pikku tyttö. Caring Handsin avulla hänestä on kasvanut vanttera emännän alku. Tämä on helppo huomata kun katsoo kuvaa tytöstä nyt ja vuosi sitten.

Näin täällä Ugandassa!
