Despite the “doctors”, she is still live!
Please pray for Sunday Moses and his family. Sunday was one
of the orphan boys digging the Caring Hands office foundation. His wife Silvia
delivered their first child: a baby girl on April 27 this year weighing 3kg at
birth. Yesterday they phoned from a small clinic located in a poor slum area of
Mbuya Hill. They were going to treat their two week old baby
Esther for malaria and “ebinyo”. Ebinyo refers to
“false teeth.” According to some traditional beliefs, a new born
baby may have “false teeth” that are actually the healthy gums of a
new born baby. It is believed that these “false teeth” may
cause high fever, diarrhea, and even death if they are not removed. Traditional
“doctor” takes a sharp, unsterilized piece of metal (for example, a
sharpened bicycle spoke), heats it up and then digs these ebinyos from
baby’s mouth. Many children die by this practice or get seriously
sick. Some suffer permanent damages in their mouth by this deforming practice.
I was shocked by this news. Not only was Esther about to be treated for
“ebinyo” but the same “doctor” tried to put a IV drip
on her. They happened to phone me and I told them to stop what they are doing
immediately. If they had succeeded with the drip, we would be having a funeral
today. They had tried to put quinine and fansidar into the vein of the child
- two strong malaria medications. We took the baby to a proper doctor and
hospital. She is sick. She weighed 3 kilos at birth and now has lost one-third
of her body weight. She is just skin and bones. She is lethargic, unresponsive
and has no energy to suck milk. She has a fever of 39.5. At the proper
hospital she was tested for malaria and it was not found. If the other
“doctor” would have succeeded in administering the IV medication,
she would have died. They now put a feeding tube through her nose and she is
getting her mother’s breast milk through it. The doctor listened to her
heart beat and he said there is an abnormal murmur. He thinks there is a hole
in her heart. Tomorrow she will be checked by cardiologist. The parents are
devastated. Both of them are orphans themselves. Sunday asked me: “Milla,
please pray with us. Our Esther is our only hope. She is the only thing we
have.”
Caring Hands has paid for the hospital bills. Today we will

P.S. Amongst the poorest in Uganda 19.2% of children die
before the age of 5. (Human development report 2007/2008). Many of them die
because of the “doctors” in these clinics.

Voitko rukoilla Sunday Moseksen ja hänen
perheensä puolesta. Sunday on ollut yksi niistä orpopojista, jotka ovat olleet
kaivamassa Caring Handsin toimiston perustoja. Hänen nuori vaimonsa Silvia
synnytti heidän ensimmäisen lapsensa huhtikuun 27pv. Tyttö vauvan syntymäpaino
oli 3kg. He soittivat minulle eilen eräältä pikku klinikalta keskellä
slummialuetta Mbuyan mäeltä. Kahden viikon ikäisellä Esterillä todettiin olevan
malaria ja “ebinyo”. Ebinyot ovat perinteisten uskomusten mukaan
“irtohampaita/tekohampaita”, jotka oikeasti ovat ihan normaalit
vauvan ikenet. Ebinyot “aiheuttavat” kuumetta, ripulia ja jopa
kuoleman, jos niitä ei kaiveta pois. “Erikoislääkäri” ottaa terävän,
steriloimattoman metallisen instrumentin, joka on usein polkupyörän pinnasta
väännetty apuväline. Hän saattaa kuumentaa sitä minkä jälkeen kaivaa ebinyoja
vauvan ikenistä ulos. Monet lapset ovat tulleet hyvin sairaiksi ja jopa
kuolleet tämän toiminpiteen vuoksi. Joillekin heistä on jäänyt pysyvät vammat
suuhun. Minun oli vaikea uskoa, mitä kuulin. Sama lääkäri, joka
“ammattitaitoisesti” neuvoi heitä ebinyojen poistamisesta oli
laittamassa tippaletkuja tuohon Esteri vauvan pieneen ja hentoon käteen. Onneksi
he soittivat ja sain heidät uskomaan, että lapselle ei saa antaa mitään
lääkettä eikä ebinyoja saisi poistaa. Jos he olisivat onnistuneet tipan
laitossa täällä olisi hautajaiset tänään. Lääkäri oli yrittänyt laittaa
Quinineä ja fansidaria suoraan suoneen, mikä on liian vahva lääke
vastasyntyneelle. Veimme vauvan kunnon sairaalaan ja lääkäriin. Ester on
todella sairaassa ja heikkossa kunnossa. Hän painoi syntyessään kolme kiloa ja
nyt ainoastaan kaksi kiloa. Hän on menettänyt kahdessa viikossa kolmanneksen
painostaan. Ester on veltto ja reagoimaton, eikä jaksa imeä maitoa. Hänellä on
myös korkea kuume (39.5C). Tuolla kunnollisessa sairaalassa malariatestin
tulos oli negatiivinen. Ravintonsa vauva saa nenämahaletkun kautta. Esterillä
havaittiin myös epätavallinen sydänääni, joka tutkitaan huomenna. Lääkärit
epäilevät, että vauvalla olisi reikä sydämessä. Nuorten vanhempien sydämet
ovat murskattuja. Heillä ei ole ketään muuta kuin toisensa, sillä molemmat
heistä ovat täysin orpoja. Sunday kysyi: “Voitko rukoilla kanssamme.
Ester on meidän ainoa toivomme- meillä ei ole ketään muuta tässä
maailmassa!”
