War Dance

Have you seen the film "War Dance"? This touching documentary is made by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine. The film has won many international prizes and was nominated as the best Documentary Feature at this year's Oscars. The film is about three northern Ugandan refugee children from Patongo. The traumatized children experience freedom and joy through music and traditional dance. In the documentary Dominic, Rose and Nancy tell about their lives and dreams. The ladies from Caring Hands came to do voluntary work for three days. They eagerly arranged beautiful jewelry for a US event. Because there are many Acholi tribe members in the group, we wanted to show them this film. In a typically African way, they reacted strongly to the film: wiping away tears, laughter, yelling, jumping, clapping, talking and adding commentary. Out ofthe 18 women who were with us today, 5 belong to the Acholi tribe. Alice, Molly and Byanka are from the Patongo - the IDP (Internally Displaced People) camp that the film is about. The story hit even closer home when the sisters Molly and Byanka realized that one of the persons that the film is about, Rose, is their late brother's daughter. The brother had been killed by the Kony (the leader of the rebel movement). In our living room there was no dry eye. Filmi kertoo kolmen pohjois- ugandalaisen pakolaislapsen tarinan Patongon pakolaisleiriltä. Kovia kokeneet lapset saavat tuntea olevansa vapaita ja iloisia musiikin ja traditionaalisen tanssin kautta. Dokumentissa Dominic, Rose ja Nancy kertovat elämästään ja toiveistaan. Caring Handsin naisilla on ollut kolme talkoopäivää peräkkäin. He ovat ahkerasti sommitelleet kauniita koruja USA:ssa pidettävään tapahtumaan. Koska ryhmässämme on monia acholi heimoon kuuluvia pakolaisia pohjois-Ugandasta, halusimme työpäivän päätteeksi näyttää heille tämän filmin. Afrikkalaiseen tapaan naiset reagoivat voimakkaasti filmin edetessä: kyyneleitä pyyhittiin poskilta, naurua, hihkumista, hyppimistä ja pomppimista, käsien taputusta, keskustelua ja kommentointia. Talkoolaisia oli tänään 18, joista viisi oli acholiheimoon kuluvia. Kolme heistä olijuuri tuosta Patongo nimisestä pakolaisleiristä: Alice, Molly ja Byanka. Nuo tarinat tulivat vielä todellisimmiksi meille kaikille. Se kosketti enemmän , kun sisarukset Molly ja Byanka tajusivat, että kertomuksen yksi pakolaislapsista, Rose, oli heidän Kony sissien tappaman veljen tytär.Olohuoneessamme ei ollut yhtään kuivaa silmäparia.
