VISITORS, CELEBRATIONS, SCHOOL AND JUST BEING TOGETHER. ONCE AGAIN, LETTING THE GOOD COME AND GO AROUND.

Festivities are good place to begin, as drums, dance and song have echoed out of Caring Hands on many afternoons so far this year. Even several guests and groups of visitors have had the opportunity to enjoy the performances and hearing about the women’s life stories. We even held a wedding celebration over here. Congratulations Pia and Nuren!

Among other things, in the beginning of March we were delighted by a visit from Maija Saarni, a Development Coordinator from Fida, and later on, by a team of CPA (Christian Partners in Africa) from Great Britain.

Even Canada called on us, as Caring Hands power couple John and Carole Grabish came all the way from Thunder Bay, for a two week visit in a hot Kampala.

All visitors are important to Caring Hands, because through them our message and beautiful beads are passed forward into the rest of the world and the good continues to go around.

Studies and ethical ponderings. In the midst of all the visits and celebrations it is always a good thing to calm down and also spend time focusing on some of the more serious issues.

Our literacy and writing program is already more than halfway through its second year and on April 14^th, the ladies received their intermediate reports. No longer does anyone need to use an “X” or thumbprint for a signature, instead all of the names are written in beautiful, individual handwritings. In addition, mathematical equations along with various societal issues have been covered, lessons have been learned and many of the women are already reading fluently. Needless to say, self-respect is improving!

At the end of April we began to hold series of gatherings to discuss the topic of ethics, two of which have already been held. Fida interns Malla and Katja led a fine presentation on the topic and afterwards, with the help of dramatic skits and speeches, we discussed different ethical issues and scenarios, what is “right” and what is “wrong”.

Since the start of this year, Caring Hands social worker Dan Njuba has put in a lot of hard work and effort in regard to child protection matters and as a result we have now held two large functions in March-April along this theme. These occasions have been attended by teachers, religious leaders, police representatives, social workers, children’s parents and of course also by Caring Hands workers and bead makers. The idea is to raise awareness of children’s rights and to educate and stir the community to carry the issue and concern forward. Those who attended the meetings now continue to work in small groups among their own neighborhoods.

This is an extremely important and remarkable work!

Malaria, the silent killer. Like the HIV infection, malaria also kills a large number of people in Uganda each year. While Malaria is an infectious, fever causing disease transmitted and spread through mosquito bites, it is treatable. Because malaria transmission happens mainly between dusk and dawn as that is when the mosquitoes are out in flight, the best way to prevent infections during these hours is by wearing clothing that covers and protects your skin and by sleeping under a bed net.

Unfortunately not everyone can afford mosquito nets or medical treatment if they are already infected, thus Caring Hands has already been distributing nets and helping many people to receive treatment this year! Information and awareness of this deadly but treatable virus must be shared!

A time to clean and to clear out the clutter.

Every single day, a considerable amount of work takes place at both the Caring Hands bead and paper workshops. As a side product, we get a lot of mess that doesn’t always get sorted out with the daily clean-up. Therefore, it was high time to put things back in their proper places and tidy up!

Boxes upon boxes of beads were carried out and jewelry reorganized into bunches of ten as we cleaned out our storage space. We even managed to finally replace the curtains that were destroyed in last year’s fire! At last, the storeroom is in beautiful order with our new red curtains adding to the celebratory mood. Now the place is fit to be disheveled and untidy again!

Time for goodbyes.

Our interns Malla Vanhoja and Katja Hintikka have come to the end of their 3 ½ month placement at Caring Hands. Finland is calling the girls home and their return journey will begin on May 19^th.

Thank you girls, you have been such a great help in this hectic Caring Hands family life!

What’s more, Pia Abubakar (formerly Järvinen) will end her 15 month long stay in Uganda and as our volunteer as she returns to Finland at the end of May. Without a doubt, Caring Hands work will continue on in Finland and beads will be sold on the side.

In the words of Milla:”It will leave a great ache behind, Pia will be missed and her position will be hard to replace. Come back already!”

VIERAILIJOITA JA JUHLIA, OPISKELUA JA YHDESSÄ OLOA. TAAS ON LAITETTU HYVÄ KIERTÄMÄÄN!

Huvittelusta on hyvä aloittaa sillä tanssi, laulu ja rummutus on raikunut taas Caring Handsillä usein iltapäivisin tänäkin vuonna. Esityksistä ja naisten elämäntarinoista on päässyt nauttimaan usea vierailijaryhmä ja vietettiin meillä täällä yhdet hääjuhlatkin. Onnea Pia ja Nuren!

Muun muassa kehitysyhteistyökoordinaattori Maija Saarni Fidasta ilahdutti vierailullaan Caring Handsiä jo maaliskuun alussa ja iso ryhmä CPA:sta (Christian Partners in Africa) Iso-Britanniasta kävi myös maaliskuussa.

Myös Kanadasta kajahti, kun Caring Handsin Thunder Bayn voimakaksikko John ja Carole Grabish tulivat kaksiviikkoiselle vieraillu Kampalaan toukokuun helteisiin.

Kaikki vierailijat ovat tärkeitä meille, sillä niin saadaan Caring Hands sanomaa sekä kauniita koruja eteenpäin maailmalle eli hyvä kiertää!

Opiskelua ja eettisiä pohdintoja.Vierailujen ja juhlahumun keskellä on aina hyvä rauhoittua vakavampienkin asioiden äärelle.

Luku-ja kirjoitusohjelman toinen vuosi on jo opiskeltu yli puolen välin ja huhtikuun 14. naiset saivat välitodistuksensa. Enää ei kukaan tarvitse allekirjoitukseen puumerkkejä, vaan nimet kirjoitetaan kauniilla käsialoilla. Moni osaa jo lukea sujuvasti ja matemaattiset yhtälöt sekä monet yhteiskunnalliset asiat on opittu ja läpi käyty. Omanarvontunto kohenee!

Huhtikuun lopulla alkoi, nyt jo kaksi kertaa kokoontunut, tilaisuus, jonka aiheena oli etiikka. Fidan harjoittelijat Malla ja Katja pitivät hienon alustuksen aiheesta. Sen jälkeen näytelmien ja puheenvuorojen voimin keskusteltiin erilaisita eettisistä asioista, mikä on oikein ja mikä on väärin.

Sosiaalityöntekijämme Njuba Dan on tehnyt alkuvuoden kovasti työtä lastensuojeluun liittyvissä asioissa ja tämän tiimoilta on ollut nyt kaksi isoa tilaisuutta maalis-huhtikuussa. Tilaisuuteen osallistui poliisivoimien edustajia, sosiaalityöntekijöitä, opettajia, lasten vanhempia, uskonnollisia johtajia ja toki Caring Handsin helmentekijöitä ja työntekijöitä. Tilaisuuksien tarkoituksena oli saattaa tietoisuuteen lasten oikeudet ja saada yhteisö heräämään sekä valistumaan ja viemään asiaa eteenpäin. Mukana olleet jatkavat nyt työtä pienryhmissä omassa yhteisössään.

Todella tärkeä ja mahtava juttu!

Malaria, hiljainen tappaja. Kuten HIV-infektio, niin myös malaria tappaa vuosittain Ugandassakin paljon. Malaria on hoidettavissa oleva kuumetauti, joka leviää ns. malariahyttysen piston välityksellä. Hyttyset lentävät hämärän aikaan, joten paras tapa välttyä tartunnalta on suojautuminen vaatetuksella sekä nukkua vuodeverkon alla.

Kaikilla ei ole varaa verkkoihin tai lääkehoitoon, jos ovat jo sairastuneet. Caring Hands on jakanut vuodeverkkoja ja avustanut monia saamaan hoitoa jo tänäkin vuonna! Valistusta tästä tappavasta, mutta hoidettavissa olevasta taudista on jaettava!

Joskus on vähän sotkujakin siivottava.

Homma Caring Handsin helmi- ja paperityöpajoissa on päivittäin melkoista. Työn tuoksinnassa tulee sotkua, jota ei aina joka päiväisellä siivouksella saada selviteltyä. Oli siis aika taas panna paikat järjestykseen!

Helmilaatikot kannettiin ulos ja kaikki kaulakorut ja käsirenkaat pantiin kymmenen nippuihin, varasto laitettiin uuteen uskoon ja vielä viime vuoden tulipalon jäljiltä uupuneet verhotkin saatiin hankittua. Nyt on varasto taaskauniissa järjestyksessä ja punaiset verhot tuovat lisä tunnelmaa. Kelpaa taas sotkea!

Jälleen on aika hyvästien.

Harjoittelijat Malla Vanhoja ja Katja Hintikka ovat saaneet kolmen ja puolen kuukauden pestin päätökseen. Suomi kutsuu tyttöjä ja kotimatka alkaakin toukokuun 19. päivä.

Kiitos tytöt, olette olleet suuren suuri apu tässä hektisessä Caring Handsin perhe-elämässä!

Myös Pia Abubakar (entinen Järvinen) päättää 15 kuukautta kestäneen vapaaehtoistyönsä ja matkaa Suomen suveen toukokuun lopulla. Caring Hands työt jatkuvat varmasti myös Suomessa ja helmiä myydään kaiken muun homman ohella.

February was more like “tooth fairy”, at least for Akullo Evalyn.

A little over a year ago, Evalyn was struck in the face by her husband, with devastating results. Not only did her two front teeth suffer from the severe blow, but so did her emotional and mental wellbeing. As a very cheerful and lively young woman, the unpleasant experience pained Evelyn and quite often she would find herself daring to dream that one day she might get her smile back.

Last November, as we were holding a farewell party, Evalyn said with a twinkle in her eye: “Don’t forget to send me those new teeth from Finland”. And wouldn’t you know it! Our intern Milka discussed the matter with a friend and in February the tooth money arrived from Finland, bringing back laughter and restoring the beautiful smile on Evalyn’s face! Thank you to the donor!

Medical bills and people taken ill

Many of the men, women and children at Caring Hands are HIV-positive. This immunodeficiency virus causes all kinds of sickness and disease but despite the constant health battle, the beginning of this year has so far been a victorious one for the entire Caring Hands team.

Let’s take for example Nampijja Christine. Her ill health began at the end of January and dragged on until eventually it drove her to the hospital bed. Nampijja is not only HIV-positive and on ARV medication, but she also suffers from lung trouble on top of being in the middle of cancer treatment. While Caring Hands offers help and support, what is more precious than gold for those in hospital care is being surrounded by loved ones, because the presence of family and friends and their participation in caring for the sick is not always guaranteed, and so that is something we at Caring Hands strive to offer and encourage.

Nampijja is once again in good health and every day she seen at Caring Hands, helping out with the bead making.

Children have also been suffering from various illnesses. There are constant cases of malaria, rotting teeth, pox-like diseases and awful rashes. At Caring Hands we are doing whatever we can to support these families, but help is always appreciated as many of them are in need family sponsorships.

Changes in living conditions and living at the mercy of the weather

Lots of families have been helped so far and the quality of life has risen for many from being on the floor to sleeping in a bed. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of work left to do.

Home visits are always a great opportunity to get better acquainted with and to really see below the surface into the daily lives and routines of families.

In the rainy season as the storm clouds gather, lighting rips the sky, the ground shakes with thunder and the rain blows sheets of water in every possible direction, the destruction can be devastating as clay houses and mud huts fall apart and suffer water damage. While some people have already been able to relocate into sturdier homes, quite a few families are still waiting for such an opportunity or have begun building a house of their own.

Our latest home visits have been made to families living in the countryside, giving us a chance to admire some of Uganda’s lush and beautiful landscapes in the process, such as fields upon fields of tea growing on the hillsides and the many forests full of matoke/banana trees. Quite many living in these remote areas are able to grow at least a portion of their own food, and have various fruits trees and vegetables in their gardens. Sometimes even the houses may be bigger and in better condition than those of the people living in city slums, but even so, living in the countryside does comes with its own, different set of problems. Take for instance, the obstacle of distance. Sometimes the closest clinic offering health care may be many kilometers away and difficult to reach. Even going to the market and visiting the village can be a struggle, and something as simple as getting your cell phone recharged or buying and transporting a 50kg bag of posho flour will require some planning and preparation.

Still, it’s been wonderful to see the different backgrounds that our Caring Hands families come from!

Stories behind the beads

At the moment, Caring Hands has one man and 50 women making beads, but when you also include their families along with all of the workers we have into the count, the number is already in the hundreds- talk about a big Caring Hands family! And while the paper beads are indeed gorgeous and temptingly delicious on their own, and though the work that happens around them and through them is fascinating too, what many people are really interested in are the stories behind the beads. Stella Atal and Caring Hands- creating stunning artwork together!

While Ugandan artist Stella Atal has worked together with Caring Hands for quite some time now, her latest wall cloths and paintings, filled with an array of bright African colors and rhythms have found a new flavor in the mix, the Caring Hands beads! And we have to say, the end result is captivating! The cloth artworks can be found in various different sizes and are now finally available for purchase.

Soccer Volunteers

The soccer/football project, that was started last April for the orphans and underprivileged kids in the area, came to a triumphant finish when the tournament finals were held in December. Both the children and adults were so excited about the experience, and as the teams established in the three different areas became well unified, the project has been able to continue voluntarily every Saturday. Thanks to the new footballs, pumps and ball bags donated by Jim Burruss and his family, from Salt Lake City USA, this soccer season has certainly received a great kick start! A huge thank you to the Burruss family!

Helmikuu on hammaskuu, jos kysyt asiaa Akullo Evalyniltä.

Reilu vuosi sitten sai Evalyn aviomieheltään nyrkiniskun naamaansa ikävin seurauksin – pahan kolauksen kokivat niin molemmat etuhampaat, kuin tämän nuoren naisen psyykkinen hyvinvointikin. Nauravaisena ja hyvin eläväisenä naisena tämä kaikki sattui Evalyniin ja hyvin usein hänen pienenä toiveena olikin saada hymynsä takaisin.

Viime marraskuussa, kun vietimme läksiäisiäsjuhlia, sanoi Evalyn pilke silmäkulmassaan: ”lähettäkäähän sieltä Suomesta sitten ne uudet hampaat minulle”. Kuinkas sitten kävikään! Harjoittelijamme Milka puhui asiasta ystävälleen ja niin saapuivat helmikuussa hammasrahat Suomesta ja kaunis hymy sekä herakka nauru palautettiin taas Evalynin kasvoille! Kiitos lahjoittajalle!

Sairasteluja, sairauksia ja sairaskuluja.

Monet Caring Handsin naisista, miehistä ja lapsista ovat HIV-positiivisia. Tämä ihmisen immuunikatovirus saa aikaan kaikenlaista sairastelua. Alkuvuosi on ollut kovin sairasteluvoittoinen koko Caring Hands tiimissä.

Esimerkkinä muun muassa Nampijja Christine. Hänen huonovointisuutensa alkoi jo tammikuun lopulla ja pitkään jatkunut sairastelu ajoi hänet lopulta myös sairaalahoitoon. Nampijja on HIV-positiivinen ja syö siihen lääkkeitä, hänellä on myös syöpähoidot meneillään ja paljon ongelmia keuhkoissa. Caring Hands auttaa ja on tukena, mutta kultaakin kalliimpia kaikesta ovat omaiset, sillä heidän läsnäolonsa ja hoitoon osallistumisensa ei aina ole itsestäänselvyys ja siihen pyrimme myös tukea Caring Handsillä antamaan.

Nampijja on taas hyvässä voinnissa ja joka päivä hänet näkee Caring Handsilla auttamassa helmien teossa.

Lapsia ovat myös monet sairastelut vaivanneet. On jatkuvaa malariaa, mätäneviä hampaita, rokkotauteja ja pahoja ihottumia. Caring Hands tukee perheitä kaikin mahdollisin keinoin, mutta apu on aina tarpeen ja perheet tarvitsevat tukiperheitä.

Vaihtelevat elinolot ja säiden armoilla olo.

Paljon on perheitä autettu ja elinoloja nostettu ”lattiatasolta sänkyihin”, mutta työmaata piisaa silti. Kotikäynneillä pääsee aina tutustumaan pintaa syvemmälle ja näkemään sen todellisen arjen, jota perheet elävät.

Sadeaikaan, kun taivas salamoi, vettä tulee vaakasuoraan vihmomalla ja myrsky jyllää, niin savimajat romahtavat ja vesi tulee sisään. Tuho voi olla järkyttävää. Kestävimpiin koteihin on jo moni päässyt, mutta usea perhe vielä odottaa vuoroaan tai rakentaa jopa omaa taloaan.

Viimeisimmät kotikäynnit ovat nyt tehty maaseudulla asuvien perheiden luokse ja näin olemme päässeet ihastelemaan Ugandan kaunista vehreää luontoa; kumpuilevia teepeltoja ja matoke-banaanipuumetsiä. Maaseudulla asuvat pystyvät usein kasvattamaan ainakin osan ruoastaan itse, pihalla kasvaa erilaisia hedelmäpuita ja vihanneksia. Talot saattavat olla isompia ja parempikuntoisia kuin kaupungin slummeissa olevat, mutta toki maaseudulla asuvat kohtaavat omat erilaiset ongelmansa. Etäisyydet ovat monesti pitkät; lähin terveydenhoitoa tarjoava paikka voi olla kymmenien kilometrien päässä ja pääsy sinne on vaikeaa. Torille, kylille ja kaupoille pääsy voi olla hankalaa ja esim. 50 kg:n poshojauhopussin ostaminen tai vaikkapa kännykän akun lataaminen vaatii oman suunnitelunsa.

On kuitenkin upeaa nähdä kuinka erilaisista paikoista Caring Handsin perheet tulevat!

Stella Atal ja Caring Hands – yhteistyöllä kaunista taidetta!

Ugandalainen taiteilija Stella Atal on jo tovin tehnyt yhteistyötä Caring Handsin kanssa. Stellan Afrikan värejä ja rytmejä huokuvat seinävaatteet ovat saaneet lisämausteen Caring Hands helmistä ja lopputulos on valloittava! Seinävaatteita on erikokoisia ja niitä on nyt myös myynnissä.

Jalkapalloa vapaaehtoistyönä.

Orvoille ja vähäosaisille lapsille viime huhtikuussa alkanut jalkapalloprojekti päättyi hienoon lopputurnaukseen joulukuussa. Lapset ja aikuiset ovat olleet asiasta niin innostuneita ja kolmeen eri paikkaan luodut joukkueet ovat niin hyvin yhteenhioutuneet, että touhu on jatkunut vapaaehtoisesti joka lauantai.

Myös Salt Lake Citystä U.S.A:sta Jim Burrussin perheeltä lahjoituksena saadut uudet jalkapallot, pumput ja pallokassit ovat näin saaneet hyvän alkupotkun. Suuret kiitokset Burrussin perheelle!

Caring Hands Kampala kuittaa - toukokuun tohinoita odotellessa!

FIRST NEWS OF THE YEAR- THE FAMILY HAS GROWN

Caring Hands keeps on growing and developing, a reality that any visitor on the spot cannot fail to notice. As our activities continue to increase, so does the workload.

We now have additional people working in both the administration and social-work sectors, along with reinforcements helping with the palm seed jewelry and bead making. Even the paper department has received a brilliant volunteer, Jamie, and as our storage continues to fill up with cards and books, soon we will have the opportunity to sell these new products as well!

In the beginning of February we also welcomed three new interns; Katja and Malla from Finland, and Hannington who is from right here in Kampala, Uganda. Even I, Pia, have had the opportunity to return to this wonderful work for a few more months. But let’s not forget our new furry friend Muzungu, a stray cat who melted the hearts of and strengthened the Caring Hands team at the end of the year with her charm.

Therefore, our offices are currently bursting at the seams and even part of the Happonen’s house has been converted into a storage facility and a place to accommodate the papermaking team.

But the best part of all this is that the work continues to progress and there is always plenty of activity!

Prepared for the New Year!

As some of you know, we were literally on fire at the end of 2009 as our facilities burst into flames. After making it through that ordeal we are now wiser and have obtained fire extinguishers as well as had training in how to use them. Needless to say, we are learning to be more careful, and candles in particular (used in the process of making earrings) are now used only under great care and strict supervision.

Improving the quality of life: from the hard floor to a soft bed.

Thanks to all the family supporters and people who have purchased Caring Hands beads, every single member of Nirere Prossy and Mukakigeri Madeleine’s families now get to sleep and dream each night in a bed of their own! Webale nnyo mwena!

Keeping up with the latest fashion

We have already surveyed the color schemes and trends for the Spring and Summer of 2010, as well as taken a peek at the latest fashion and styles for the coming fall and winter. Caring Hands is keeping up with the tide as cardboard boxes and packages are quickly filling up with the most delicious colors and jewelry. In fact, orders keep coming in at such a rapid pace that the atmosphere around here often resembles Santa’s workshop at the North Pole!

Flood of the needy

Every single day there are women with their children, fathers, the sick, and many other needy people showing up and waiting in front of the Caring Hands offices in hopes of receiving help and assistance. Let us take for example, the story of Nalunkuma Evan and her one and a half year old son Alex:

The morning of February 17^th brought with it a young woman to our office with a child in her arms. This child, a small boy, seemed somewhat rigid, but the worry and suffering could be seen on his mother’s face.

The boy’s health began to suffer last September when his left eye began to swell. At the time, a small surgical procedure was done at the Mengo Hospital, but only a week after the operation, the situation grew worse. The swelling continued to increase until the entire area around the eye was the size of a large grapefruit, oozing liquids. Alex and his mother had also been to the doctor at Mulago hospital, but the further tests and CT-scan needed before a more significant operation could even be considered , were expensive and they simply could not afford them.

Worried about her son’s health and frustrated at their financial situation, Alex’s mother Eva prayed for her son. One day as she sat in a Matatu, a small bus, a complete stranger told her about Madam Milla and Caring Hands. As a result, a small spark of hope was reignited in the hearts of the pair.

Now Eva is a widow and mother of four children. Her husband died last July after being taken ill with Malaria. She now lives in a village called Kireku with her sister and her son Alex. After the youngest son became ill, Eva had sent her other three children to live with their grandmother. Although there hasn’t been any work available, what has helped the daily lives of this poor family is a small garden where they have been able to grow their own food.

Caring Hands assisted Eva and Alex by providing them with the funds for a CT-scan and other required pre-surgery tests, and so Alex will be going to the hospital next Monday, March 3^rd.

We will wait and watch to see how the story continues.

VUODEN ENSIMMÄISET UUTISET – PERHE ON KASVANUT

Caring Hands kasvaa ja varttuu, sen saa jokainen paikan päälle tuleva todeta omin silmin. Toiminta laajenee ja työmäärä lisääntyy sen mukaisesti.

Uusia työntekijöitä on tullut nyt hallinnon ja sosiaalityön puolelle, mutta myös apujoukkoja helmen sekä palmunsiemenkorujen tekoon. Myös paperipuoli on saanut loistavan vapaaehtoisen, Jamien, ja pian alkaa olla varasto kortteja ja kirjoja täynnä ja pääsemme myymään näitäkin tuotteita!

Helmikuun alussa saimme myös kolme uutta harjoittelijaa; Katja ja Malla Suomesta sekä Hannington täältä Kampalasta Ugandasta. Myös minä, Pia, sain mahdollisuuden palata vielä muutamaksi kuukaudeksi tekemään tätä ihanaa työtä. Mutta eipäs myöskään unohdeta meidän uutta karvakamua, löytökissa Muzungua, joka vahvisti Carin Hands tiimiä loppu vuodesta suloisuudellaan.

Näin ollen siis toimistot pullistelevat ja Happosten talostakin on jo osa jouduttu ottamaan varastotiloiksi sekä paperintekoryhmän käyttöön.

Mutta hienointa on, että homma etenee ja toimintaa riittää!

Varustautuneena uuteen vuoteen!

Vuosi 2009 päättyi roihuvasti tulipaloon, josta selvinneenä ja viisastuneena Caring Handsille on nyt hankittu vaahtosammuttimet ja samalla myös koulutus käyttää niitä. Korvakorujen tekoon tarvittavia kynttilöitä käytetään hyvin valvotusti ja muutenkin pyritään minimoimaan vaaratilanteet.

Elintasoa on jälleen nostettu lattiatasolta sänkyihin.

Jälleen on muutama perhe saanut uuden uutukaiset kerrossängyt patjoineen ja petivaatteineen. Joka iikka Nirere Prossyn ja Mukakigeri Madeleinen perheistä pääsevät nyt iltaisin omiin sänkyihinsä uneksimaan. Kiitokset kuuluvat kaikille Caring Handsin helmiä ostaneille sekä tukiperheille. Muodissa mukana – Caring Hands

Kevään ja kesän 2010 muotivärit on katsastettu ja hieman toki syksyä ja talveakin jo vilkuiltu. Caring Hands kulkee myös muodissa mukana. Tilauksia tulee ruhtinaallisesti ja vilinä on aina kuin Joulupukin pajassa. Pahvilaatikot täyttyvät toinen toistaan ihanimmista väreistä ja koruista. Nimi päälle ja eikun postiin!

Avuntarvitsijoiden tulva!

Päivittäin Caring Handsin toimiston ulkopuolelle tulee istumaan naisia lapsineen, perheenisiä, sairaita… avuntarvitsijoita. Tässä esimerkkinä Nalunkuma Evan ja hänen puolitoista vuotiaan Alex poikansa tarina.

Keskiviikko aamu 17.2. toi toimistolle nuoren naisen lapsi sylissään. Lapsi, pieni poika, oli hyvin jähmettyneen oloinen; kärsimyksen ja huolen pystyi helposti lukemaan äidin kasvoilta.

Pojan terveys alkoi reistailla viime syyskuussa, kun vasen silmä alkoi turvota. Silloin siihen tehtiin pieni leikkaus Mengon sairaalassa. Viikko leikkauksesta tilanne paheni ja turvotus lisääntyi, kunnes koko silmän alue oli noin greipin kokoinen iso pallo, josta valui märkää. Äiti ja Alex-poika ovat nyt käyneet lääkärin luona myös Mulagon sairaalassa, mutta isompaan leikkaukseen tarvittavat tiedot ja CT-kuvaus maksaa ja siihen heillä ei ole rahaa.

Huolissaan poikansa terveydestä ja turhautuneena rahatilanteesta Eva-äiti rukoili poikansa puolesta ja eräänä päivänä hänen istuessaan matatussa, pikku bussissa, eräs tuntematon mies kertoi hänelle Madam Millasta ja Caring Handsistä. Ja niin pieni toivon kipinä oli taas syttynyt kaksikon rintaan.

Eva on neljän lapsen leskiäiti, hänen miehensä kuoli viime heinäkuussa sairastuttuaan malariaan. Hän asuu Kirekun kylässä siskonsa ja Alex poikansa kanssa. Kolme muuta lastaan hän lähetti isoäidin luo nuorimman poikansa sairastuttua. Työtä ei ole ollut tarjolla, mutta pientä apua päivittäiseen elämään tuo puutarha, jossa he kasvattavat ruokansa.

Caring Hands auttoi Evaa ja Alexia antamalla heille rahan CT-kuvaukseen ja muihin leikkausta edeltäviin tutkimuksiin ja nyt Alex on menossa ensi maanantaina 8.3. sairaalaan.

RED AND PINK!

THE LAST GASPS OF THE YEAR AND A COUPLE OF FAREWELLS!

What color should I dress in today? With what color can I inspire myself today? What color is fashionable? If you ask the team at Caring Hands, the answer is pink and red! Caring Hands team has received two new family members: single mothers Nekesa Juliet and Kikome Rose, to add to our lives pink and red. These colors are found in the form of small glass beads that their versatile fingers are arranged into ribbons.

The red ribbons are used to symbolize the care and concern for those who are living with HIV and their families. The charming pink ribbons in turn symbolize support for those who have breast cancer and their families.

Juliet and Rose have been trained to make these ribbons and Caring Hands buys them so the women can earn their monthly livelihood.

Kikome Rose and her children are those that were blessed with new beds, mattresses, blankets and cutlery from Caring Hands. Also, the family was moved into a house that is in much better condition than their old one on December 7^th. What a Christmas!

It is time to celebrate as well as to say farewell!

Caring Hands had a Christmas party and said farewell on November 27^th. The drums thundered, the songs echoed and hips wiggled in time with the music as Christmas gifts were exchanged. The table was stacked with gifts and the feelings were in the roof.

Many eyes were moist with tears as we said farewell to Milka, Sanna and Pia. Finland is calling the trio, even though their thoughts will linger long in Africa and with Caring Hands. As the saying goes, “you need to leave, in order to return.”

A worthy Christmas break!

2009 has been a great year full of work for the Caring Hands team. Orders have been filled and beads packed from early morning to late at night. Now is the time to relax and to close the office for a while.

PUNAISTA JA PINKKIÄ!

VUODEN VIIMEISET RUTISTUKSET JA MUUTAMAT HYVÄSTIT!

Mitä väriä pukisin tänään? Mistä väristä saisin piristystä päivääni? Mikä väri on nyt muodissa? Jos kysyt Caring Hands tiimiltä, vastaus on pinkki ja punainen!

Caring Hands tiimi on saanut kaksi uutta perheenjäsentä, yksinhuoltajaäidit Nekesa Juliet ja Kikome Rose, tuomaan eloomme lisää pinkkiä ja punaista. Värit tarjoillaan pienten kauniiden lasihelmien muodossa ja naisten näppärät sormet taikovat niistä nauhakkeita.

Punaista nauhaa käytetään symboloimaan huolenpitoa ja välittämistä hiv-tartunnan kanssa eläville ja heidän perheilleen. Hempeän vaaleanpunainen nauha vuorostaan symboloi rintasyöpään sairastuneiden sekä heidän perheidensä jaksamisen tukemista.

Juliet ja Rose ovat nyt saaneet koulutuksen nauhakkeiden tekoon, Caring Hands ostaa ne ja näin naiset saavat kuukausittaisen toimeentulon perheelleen.

Kikome Rose lapsineen kuuluu myös joukkioon, jota on siunattu uusilla sängyillä, patjoilla, petivaatteilla sekä ruokailuvälineillä Caring Handsin puolesta. Perhe pääsi myös muuttamaan uuteen parempikuntoiseen kotiin 7.12. Aikamoinen Joululahja!

Nyt on myös aika juhlia sekä jättää jäähyväiset!

Caring Handsillä juhlittiin pikkujoulua ja hyvästeltiin ystäviä perjantaina marraskuun 27. päivä.

Rummut soi, laulu raikui ja lanteet heiluivat musiikin tahdissa, kun pikkujoululahjat vaihtoivat omistajaa. Pöytä oli koreana ja tunnelma oli katossa.

Monet silmät kostuivat kyynelistä, kun hyvästejä sanottiin Milkalle, Sannalle ja Pialle. Suomi kutsuu kolmikkoa, vaikka ajatukset ovat varmasti pitkään Afrikassa ja Caring Handsillä.

Mutta niinhän sitä sanotaan, että ”pitää lähteä, jotta voi palata”.

Vuosi 2009 on ollut hieno ja työntäyteinen koko Caring Hands tiimille. Tilauksia on pakattu ja helmiä tehty talkoovoimin välillä aamusta pitkälle iltaan. Nyt on aika rentoutua ja laittaa toimisto hetkeksi kiinni.

Caring Hands October–November news in the midst of rains; busy, but that’s good

November - nearing the end of the year; Christmas is at hand

It is almost four years ago when Milla and Hannu got on their feet and went into their community and began the “you give them something to eat” campaign. Thus the seeds of Caring Hands were sown into Uganda’s red soil.

Assisting is not always easy. Sometimes there are no means to help and you stare helplessly at the problem eye to eye. Then you remember that loving one’s neighbor is still the most important thing, being touched and being accepted. This does not fill one’s stomach, nor does it pay the rent, but is demonstrates sincere warmth and caring in this often harsh world.

Again, all kinds of things have happened.

Milka and Sanna brought lots of reading glasses from Finland.

There are a number of women beaders who are troubled by poor eye sight because of their age. Several dozen women are sporting reading glasses as they make beads and are participating in the literacy program. Thanks to the donars for the glasses.

Many home visitations have taken place as we strive to do it monthly. When making the home visitations, one gets close to the reality where our beaders live. When it rains, the water may run inside; the roof leaks or in the worse case, the rain waters can wash the whole home with it (as happened with Bella’s family).

Of course, there are those women who have already built a house with their earnings from the beads. This is what Fatuma achieved on November 17^th, 2009.

When doing the home visitations, it is a great event for the visitors as well as the hosts. Visitors are always received with open arms.

Caring Hands has also helped many families move into a better home. The five-member family of Norah was recently helped to do so. Many children have returned to school and many mouths have been fed; many have had their medical expenses paid. Caring Hands has also been able to help many individuals and families that some donors have wanted to assist.

Monthly savings for the beaders

In November someone came from the House Finance Bank to speak about the importance of saving. All who were willing opened their own account and are able to save money for the future.

New Year, new designs and the 2010 Catalogue

We begin the New Year with new activities and renewed energy. Caring Hands has developed new designs and now it is time to put them all into a catalogue. Some designs have been discontinued or renewed. The new catalogue will appear soon.

For the first time, Caring Hands has also checked the prices of their products. To guarantee a better monthly income for the beaders, the prices have been raised 20%. However, we noticed that with the exchange rate, the prices are basically the same for our foreign buyers.

Thanks for the big jewelry orders!

Caring Hands has been blessed with large orders. As we are filling the orders, the tables are awash with colorful beads. You can find Christmas red and green colors, lilac, blue and elegant dark tones and of course, with a pinch of African splendor. The beaders have had a number of “harambees” (voluntary work) when there are new designs to make and fill orders.

From here it is good to carry on.

CARING HANDS UUTISIA LOKA-MARRASKUUN SATEIDEN KESKELTÄ –

KIIRETTÄ PITÄÄ, MUTTA SE ON VAAN HYVÄ!

Marraskuu, vuoden loppuosa meneillään ja joulukin jo lähestyy.

Siitä tulee pian neljä vuotta, kun Milla ja Hannu jalkautuivat lähiyhteisöön tempauksellaan ”antakaa te heille jotain syötävää” ja niin kylvettiin Caring Handsin siemen Ugandan punaiseen multaan.

Auttaminen ei ole aina helppoa. Toisinaan ei löydy keinoja ja sitä vaan istuu ja katsoo ongelmia silmästä silmään neuvottomana. Silloin muistaa usein sen, mikä on kuitenkin tärkeintä ja se on lähimmäisen rakkaus, kosketus ja hyväksytyksi tuleminen. Ne eivät täytä mahaa eikä niillä makseta vuokraa, mutta ne ilmentävät aitoa lämpöä ja välittämistä tässä usein niin kovassa maailmassa.

Taas on tapahtunut paljon kaikenlaista.

Milka ja Sanna toivat Suomesta tullessaan ison kasan lukulaseja. Helmentekijöiden joukossa on liuta naisia, joita alkaa jo ikänäkö vaivaamaan. Kymmenellä naisella keikkuukin jo lukulasit kauniisti silmillä helmiä tehdessä ja aikuisten lukuohjelmaan osallistuessa. Kiitos lasien lahjoittajille!

Kotikäyntejä on tehty ja niitä pyritään tekemään kuukausittain.

Kotikäynneillä pääsee niin lähelle sitä todellisuutta missä meidän helmentekijämme elävät. Sateella vesi tulvii sisään, katto vuotaa tai sadevesi saattaa pahimmassa tapauksessa viedä koko kodin mennessään, kuten kävi Bellan perheelle.

Toki joukkoon mahtuu myös naisia, jotka ovat jo ”helmillä rakentaneet” oman talonsa, kuten Fatuma, joka muutti omaan tupaan 17.11.2009!

Kotikäyntipäivä on kaikille, niin vierailijoille kuin emännille ja isännillekin, juhlapäivä ja vieraat otetaan aina avosylin vastaan!

Caring Hands on auttanut monia perheitä, muun muassa Norahin viisihenkistä perhettä, muuttamaan uuteen parempaan kotiin. Monia lapsia on saatu takaisin kouluun ja monta suuta on ruokittu sekä sairaskuluja maksettu. Apua Caring Hands on saanut myös yksityishenkilöiltä, jotka ovat tunteneet halua auttaa ja näin ottaa jopa kokonaisen perheen avunkohteekseen.

Helmentekijöistä kuukausisäästäjiä.

Marraskuussa Caring Handsillä kävi vieraita Housing Finance pankista kertomassa naisille säästämisen tärkeydestä. Jokainen halukas on nyt tilinomistaja ja näin säästää rahaa tulevaisuuden varalle.

Uusi vuosi, uudet mallit ja Katalogi 2010.

Niinhän se on että uusi vuosi aloitetaan uusin kujein ja uusin voimin. Caring Hands on vuosien varrella saanut uusia malleja ja nyt on aika laittaa kaikki katalogiin. Joitain tuotteita on myös poistettu tai uudistettu. Uusi katalogi ilmestyy piakkoin.

Uusien mallien myötä Caring Hands on ensimmäisen kerran olemassa olonsa aikana tarkistanut myös paperikorujensa hintoja. Taataksemme myös helmentekijöillemme paremman toimeentulon kuukausittain, on hintoja nyt korotettu 20%. Huomasimme kuitenkin, että vuosittaisten kurssivaihtelujen myötä, hinnat ovat silti kutakuinkin samat ulkomaisille asiakkaillemme.

Caring Handsiä on siunattu suurilla tilauksilla ja tilauksia täyttäessä pöydät kylpevät eriväristen helmien alla. Väreissä löytyy Joulunpunaista ja -vihreää, lilaa, sinistä ja elegantteja tummiä sävyjä, mutta aina hieman ripsaus Afrikan loistoa myös mukana, tietenkin! Helmentekijänaiset ovat viettäneet useamman päivän Mbuya kukkulalla Caring handsillä harambeessa (talkoissa), kun on uusia helmiä ja tilauksia tehty.

Tästä on taas hyvä jatkaa.

NORAH KYOMUGISHA AND HER FAMILY

Norah was born in January 1966 at a town called Mityana in Uganda. She is an HIV positive widow. Her husband had been shot to death by a group of thieves when he was on a business trip at Fort Portal, Uganda in 2005.

Norah has completed the third grade in school but now has been attending the Caring Hands literacy program for the past year. This has really done wonders for her self esteem and has empowered her.

She is responsible for five children. She has three of her own children as well as her HIV positive mother. This family lives in a mud hut in a slum near a swamp in Kampala. She does not have a toilet nor a bathing room. There is a toilet nearby but you need to pay to use it. Often Norah does not have the 100 Uganda shillings needed to use the toilet. The family does have one bed where Norah sleeps. The children share a small closet which sits on some dirty blankets covering the dirt floor. Their grandmother sleeps on the floor. Norah has been avoiding taking her children for HIV testing. Her fear of a positive test result has been too great. The Caring Hands team has been supporting her and on September 28^th the three children were tested and all were found to be negative!! The mother’s tears of joy, the prayers, hugs, and faces full of joy were the best reward that we could get that day!

Norah runs her own small store – a business in the midst of others who have the same type of shop made from scrap lumber offering to sell some vegetables and banana leaves. The day may pass without any customers because the competition is too ferocious. For this reason Norah cannot provide the family some of the necessities of life such as food and water.

Recently Norah has been very sick, suffering from malaria and other complications arising from her HIV infection, such as joint pain in her knees and hearing loss. Every now and then she has been so weak that she could not tend to her small shop at all. This is when her mother steps in to help as much as she can.

The lack of food, money, clothing and basically, everything takes its toll and wears her out.

A quotation from the author’s blog

”Norah, the CEO of a five tomato business and mother. She earns her living through her small business. Her small shack made from scrap lumber in the middle of an ocean of the same type of shacks. For sale are 5 tomatoes, a pineapple that has been in the sun too long and some banana leaves. The competition is tough and the sales may amount to nothing or may even produce a loss.

The family is one of the poorest I know. The good thing is they do have a home … a mud hut, a bed, a bunch of dirty clothes on the floor, a broken wall, a “flying toilet,” a bowl for washing in the clay yard. However, whenever you do meet them, they are happy and always have a smile on their face.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE CHILDREN AND THEIR SCHOOL

The Ugandan school system is different from the Finnish one. Each school year is divided into three terms. The first term begins around January–February and requires the greatest expenses because the children need school uniforms, school bags, P.E. equipment, shoes, etc. – expenses above the normal school fees. The second and third terms usually have less expenses. Of course, pens, erasers, notebooks are always required.

Norah’s firstborn son, Julius Byaruhanga was born in 1992. Julius attends a school named Kireka Barracks near his home. Caring Hands has been supporting Julius’ schooling. Julius is in the seventh grade and next year he will begin secondary school (high school).

Julius’ school fees for 2009 have been around 200,000 UGX (around 75€), excluding school uniforms and materials.

The daughters Nanfuka Lydia (born 1994) and Kisakye Dina (born 1996) are part of Fida International’s Child Sponsorship Program and their school fees are paid for from there. Earlier, Caring Hands had been paying for their school fees. The girls are in the fifth and third grades at a Christian school named Vineyard.

All three children are doing well in school and dream that they could get a good education and profession.

Norah has in addition two other children that live right now in Mityana town: Lubowa Sam (born 1997) and Nansubuga Spe (born 1992), an orphan, the daughter of Norah’s deceased brother. The children are taken care of by a pastor of a church in the town who looks after their everyday needs. The children have been promised to receive support until the seventh grade by the church. Right now they are in the third and fourth grades.

There are all kinds of other expenses the family faces on top of the school fees. They pay monthly 25,000 UGX (around 10€) rent for the small mud hut. Food, clothing, water, payments for the use of a toilet and above all, medical costs increase monthly expenses considerably. Concern for the future and finding a means to stay alive is great because Norah’s health is irregular and her business is not really profitable.

NORAH KYOMUGISHA JA HÄNEN PERHEENSÄ

Norah syntyi tammikuussa vuonna 1966 ja on kotoisin Mityanan kylästä Ugandasta. Hän on HIV positiivinen ja elää leskenä, sillä rosvojoukko ampui hänen miehensä kuoliaaksi Fort Portalissa, Ugandassa, vuonna 2005, kun hän oli siellä työmatkalla.

Koulua Norah on käynyt vain kolmannelle luokalle saakka, mutta nyt hän on käynyt vuoden ajan ahkerasti Caring Handsin luku- ja kirjoitusohjelmassa ja näin saanut omanarvontuntua ja voimaantunut.

Lapsia, joista hän on vastuussa, hänellä on kaiken kaikkiaan viisi. Norah:n tämänhetkiseen perheeseen kuuluu kuitenkin lapsista vain kolme, sekä hänen oma äitinsä, joka on myös HIV positiivinen. Tämä viisihenkinen perhe asuttaa todella huonokuntoista likaista mutamajaa slummialueella suon vierellä Kampalassa. Heillä ei ole vessaa eikä tilaa peseytymiselle. Vessa löytyy vähän matkan päästä, mutta se on maksullinen ja yleensä Norah:lla ei ole edes sitä 100 ugandan shillinkiä, jotta voisi vessaa käyttää. Perheellä on yksi sänky, jossa Norah nukkuu. Lapset jakavat pienen komeron, jonka mutalattiaa peittää läjä likaisia kankaita, se on heidän sänkynsä ja isoäiti nukkuu lattialla. Norah on vältellyt viemästä lapsiaan HIV-testeihin, pelko positiivisista tuloksista on liian kova. Mutta Caring Hands tiimi oli tukena ja 28.9. kolme lasta testattiin ja kaikki todettiin negatiivisiksi!! Äidin onnenkyyneleet ja rukoukset, halaukset ja iloiset kasvot olivat paras ”palkka” minkä päivä tarjosi!

Norah pyörittää pienen pientä kauppaa, bisnestä, kaikkien muiden samanlaisten laudasta kyhättyjen kauppojen keskellä, myyntiartikkeleina muutamia vihanneksia ja banaaninlehtiä. Yleensä päivä vierähtää ilman yhtään asiakasta, kilpailu heistä on todella kovaa. Tästä syystä Norah ei pysty tarjoamaan perheelleen edes päivittäisiä välttämättömiä asioita, kuten ruokaa ja vettä.

Viime aikoina Norah on ollut hyvin sairas, kärsinyt malariasta sekä HI-viruksen aiheuttamista ongelmista, kuten pahat nivelsäryt polvissa ja kuulonheikkeneminen. Aika-ajoin hän on ollut niin heikko, ettei ole voinut huolehtia pienestä kaupastaan ollenkaan, jolloin hänen äitinsä, auttaa häntä niin paljon kuin pystyy.

Jokapäiväinen puute ruuasta, rahasta, vaatteista ja oikeastaan kaikesta, on raastavaa ja kuluttavaa.

Laudoista kyhätty hökkeli törröttää keskellä samanlaisten kauppahökkeleiden merta. Myyntiartikkelina on 5 tomaattia, liikaa aurinkoa saanut ananas ja vähän banaaninlehtiä. Kilpailu on kovaa ja toisinaan päivän palkka on nolla tai jopa pakkasen puolella.
Perhe kuuluu yksiin köyhimpiin mitä tiedän. Tosin onhan heillä koti… mutamaja, sänkynä likainen läjä kankaita lattialla, romahtanut seinä, lentävä vessa, pesupaikkana saavi pihalla. Mutta aina heidät tapaa hymyilevinä ja iloisina!!”

HIEMAN LISÄÄ LAPSISTA JA LASTEN KOULUISTA

Ugandassa koulujärjestelmä poikkeaa hieman suomalaisesta systeemistä. Jokainen kouluvuosi jaetaan kolmeen lukukauteen. Ensimmäisellä lukukaudella, joka alkaa tammi-helmikuun vaihteessa, on yleensä eniten kustannuksia, koska lapset tarvitsevat usein uudet koulupuvut, koululaukut, urheiluvaatteet, kengät jne. normaalien koulumaksujen lisäksi. Toisella ja kolmannella lukukaudella kuluja on yleensä vähemmän. Tottakai kynät, kumit ja vihkot on aina hankittava.

Norah:n esikoinen, poika, Julius Byaruhanga syntyi vuonna 1992. Julius käy koulua kotinsa lähellä Kireka Barracks nimisessä koulussa. Caring Hands on tukenut Juliuksen koulunkäyntiä. Julius on nyt seitsemännellä luokalla ja aloittaa sitten ensi vuoden alussa yläasteen.

Juliuksen koulumaksut ovat vuonna 2009 olleet noin 200.000 UGX (n. 75e), mutta tähän ei liity vielä materiaali- eikä vaatekustannuksia.

Tyttäret Nanfuka Lydia (syntynyt 1994) ja Kisakye Dina (syntynyt 1996) kuuluvat nykyään Fida:n Child Sponsorship Programiin ja saavat sitä kautta avun koulumaksuihin. Aiemmin Caring Hands antoi tuen myös heille koulumaksuissa. Tytöt ovat viidennellä ja kolmannella luokalla Vineyardin Kristillisessä koulussa.

Kaikki kolme lasta pärjäävät hyvin koulussa ja toivovat saavansa hyvän koulutuksen ja ammatin.

Norah:lla on lisäksi kaksi lasta, jotka asuvat tällä hetkellä Mityanan kylässä. Lubowa Sam (syntynyt 1997) ja Nansubuga Spe, Norah:n kuolleen veljen tytär (syntynyt 1992). Lapset kuuluvat kylässä toimivan kirkon suojiin ja kirkon Pastori huolehtii näiden lasten koulusta ja jokapäiväisistä tarpeista. Lapsille on luvattu, että he saavat tuen kirkolta seitsemänteen luokkaan saakka. Nyt he ovat kolmannella ja neljännellä luokalla.

Kuluja perheellä on lasten koulumaksujen lisäksi toki vaikka kuinka paljon. Vuokraa he maksavat pienestä mutamajastaan 25.000 UGX / kk eli noin 10e. Ruoka, vaatteet, vesi, vessamaksut ja ennenkaikkea terveydenhoitokulut lisäävät kuukausimenoja aina tuntuvasti. Huoli tulevaisuudesta ja elannon hankkimisesta on suuri, kun Norah:n terveys reistailee ja pienen bisneksen pyörittäminenkään ei oikein tuota.

The writing of Memory Books and the ecstasy of a beauty pageant: a lovely creative chaos at Caring Hands.

What would you like to tell your child on their wedding day? What words would you like to address them with when they start their profession? How would you like your grandchildren to remember you? These thoughts, words, letters, memories and moving stories are collected into one folder and make up the Memory Book.

David Wafula visited Caring Hands on Friday September 18^th and taught all of us of the importance of the Memory Book. Here in Africa where life expectancy is low, important thoughts are not necessarily passed on from parents to children orally. To this end, the Memory Book is a beautiful solution.

The ladies of Caring Hands received this valuable information from Wafula. Sanna and Milka, art students from Finland also taught the secrets of paper making and assisted in the visual aspects of the book. This way, the ladies were able to write and draw their valuable memories into their own book.

Knowledge is passed on and memories collected.

At the 2009 Miss Uganda contest beautiful women shone as did the artist Stella Atal’s evening gowns. Above all, the Caring Hands brilliant recycled paper jewelry excelled.

Saturday the 26^th of September was a wonderful day for Uganda’s most beautiful women, as well as the Caring Hands team. The Imperial Royal Hotel in downtown Kampala was filled with people dressed in fancy clothes and beautiful hairdos.

The evening gowns were the highlight of the night. The Caring Hands paper jewelry were wrapped around the pageants wrists, decorated the necks, single beads, and strings of beads were sown into the dazzling evening dresses. Our art students, Milka and Sanna had made new ear rings and hair pins for this event. Magnificent!

The participants proudly adorned our jewelry, but surely, the happiest and proudest persons were us, the Caring Hands people sitting in the audience.

MUISTOJEN KIRJOITTELUA JA MISSEYDEN HUUMAA. SULOISEN LUOVAA SEKAMELSKAA CARING HANDSILLÄ!

Mitä haluaisit kertoa lapsellesi hänen hääpäivänään? Millaisin sanoin muistaisit häntä hänen valmistuessaan ammattiin? Millaisena haluaisit lastenlapsesi sinut muistavan? Nämä ajatukset, sanat, kirjeet, muistot ja koskettavat tarinat kootaan yksiin kansiin ja niin syntyy Memory Book.

David Wafula vieraili Caring Handsillä perjantaina 18. syyskuuta  ja kertoi koko Caring Hands tiimille Memory Bookin tärkeydestä. Täällä, Afrikassa, jossa odotettu elinikä on matala, tärkeät ajatukset eivät välttämättä siirry vanhemmilta lapsille suusanallisesti, mutta Memory Book on kaunis ratkaisu siihen.

Caring Handsin naiset saivat Wafulalta arvokkaan tiedon, taideopiskelijat Sanna ja Milka Suomesta opettivat paperinteon salat ja auttoivat visuaalisessa puolessa ja näin kaikki naiset pääsevät kirjoittamaan ja piirtämään nämä kallisarvoiset muistonsa, sanansa ja kuvansa omaan, itsevalmistamaansa kirjaan.

Tieto siirtyy ja muistot säilyvät!

Miss Uganda 2009 kilpailuissa loistivat niin kauniit naiset,  taiteilija Stella Atalin iltapuvut ja ennen kaikkea Caring Handsin mahtavat paperihelmikorut.

Lauantai 26. syyskuuta oli hieno päivä niin Ugandan kauneimmille naisille, mutta myös meille, koko Caring Hands teamille! Imperial Royal Hotel, Kampalan ytimessä, täyttyi toinen toistaan upeammissa puvuissa ja kampauksissa komeilevasta juhlakansasta.

Iltapukukierros oli illan kohokohta. Caring Handsin ladyjen paperihelmikorut oli kiedottu missien ranteisiin, ne koristivat kaulaa ja yksittäisiä helmiä, jopa helminauhoja, oli ommeltu häikäiseviin iltapukuihin. Taideopiskelijamme Milka ja Sanna olivat myös tehneet pienen malliston uusia hius- ja korvakoruja vartavasten näihin kisoihin. Upeaa!

Missit kantoivat koruja ylväinä, mutta varmasti onnellisin ja Caring Handsistä ylpein joukko istui katsomon puolella, me!

Sharing a gift

Robert comes from a family of five kids. His mother’s HIV infection caused
her medical expenses to be so high that she was unable to pay for house
rent. She ended up sleeping on the street with Robert. The other children
were put in an orphanage. A good Samaritan allowed her and Robert to sleep
in a church. We taught her to make beads and slowly she regained her
strength. She got her children back, pays for rent and has enough to eat.
The children went to school this week.
On Robert’s birthday he wanted to express his thankfulness for what Caring
Hands has done for him by giving us a small box of cookies with the
following note:

Dear Aunt Milla,
Thank you for everything you have done for us.
Today is my Birthday and I want to share what I have with you on this day.
It is a packet of something, don’t mind just take it. But share it with your
husband, and my best friend Aulla [Ulla]. I don’t know the spelling of your
names but don’t mind.

Lahjan jakaminen

Robertin perheessä on viisi lasta. Hänen äitinsä hiv-infektio aiheutti
korkeita terveydenhuollollisia kuluja, mistä johtuen he eivät kyenneet
maksamaan vuokrakuluja. Äiti ja Robert joutuivat nukkumaan kadulla. Toiset
lapset laitettiin orpokotiin. Hyväsydämminen lähimmäinen johdatti äidin ja
pojan saamaan yösijan kirkossa. Opetettuamme Robertin äidin tekemään koruja
paperihelmistä, hänen voimansa palasivat vähitellen. Hän sai lapsensa
takaisin, hän pysystyy maksamaan vuokransa ja heillä on ruokaa syödäkseen.
Tällä viikolla lapset ovat palanneet kouluun. Syntymäpäivänään Robert halusi
osoittaa kiitollisuuttaan, siitä mitä Caring Hands on tehnyt hänelle
antamalla pienen paketin pipareja ja pikku lappusen, jossa luki:

“ Rakas Milla- täti!
Kiitos kaikesta, mitä olet tehnyt meille. Tänään on minun syntymäpäiväni ja
haluan jakaa sinun kanssasi, sitä mitä minulla on tänään. Älä välitä vaikka
se on vain pikku paketti-ota se silti. Voit jakaa sen miehesi ja minun
parhaimman ystäväni Aullan (Ullan) kanssa. Äläkä välitä, vaikken tiedä,
kuinka nuo nimet kirjoitetaan!

Four years ago we took care of baby Babirye for two months at our home. When she was five months old, her mother died from AIDS. Babirye tested positive for HIV and was very sick, at the brink of death. The doctors started her on ARVs and we helped the family get a new home. At the end of February, 2009 we received the news that her father Salonko had died of AIDS.  Now all the kids are taken care of by the grandmother and the relatives. Babirye traveled with her grandmother to greet us. During the whole bus trip to Kampala she sang a song in the Ankole language:: ”Ayi Yesu, oje ompeke ayi mugongo!” (“Please my Jesus, carry me on your back!”) The heavenly Father has given Babirye health for the last four years. We are thankful for this gift from God. The piggy back ride continues ….

On 16.04.2009 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Fida International and Caring Hands. Caring Hands was also invited to attend the summer Pentecostal conference in Keuru, Finland during mid-summer to sell our products and speak about our work. There will be two Ugandan Caring Hands ladies with us. We are thankful for this honor. Fida’s Executive Director, Rauno Mikkonen wrote the following message: “Fida’s board unanimously ratified the Memorandum of Understanding between Caring Hands and Fida International at the board meeting held on 13.5.2009.”

On May 14th and 15th, 2009, received two groups of third grade kids from Kampala International School. They had been taught about the environment of the use of recycled materials. They had read about Caring Hands in a local magazine and contacted us and wanted to see how beads are made from recycled paper. Each student proudly displayed the beads they had made after their three hour visit.

In 2008, after careful consideration, we invested a large sum of money to fulfill one orphan’s dream of becoming a pilot. We felt that this was a person we should invest in. Patrick got his pilot’s license (he still dreams of getting his commercial pilot’s license). At the school Patrick got to know one of his fellow students who was touched by his story. The fellow student came with his fiancé to see Caring Hands. They encouraged us to apply for a grant from USAID. We signed the agreement on 22.05.2009. The grant will be used to help orphans and vulnerable children. The grant is almost twice as large as what we invested in Patrick’s license. Without Patrick’s contact, we would not have known of the whole program. Our investment brought this blessing.

Paulo is doing well. He is going to a real school! He has never been able to go to school because of his illness (he is HIV positive). He was not strong enough to walk to school. “I have been practicing walking and am now able to walk the 2 kms.” Paulo told us when we visited him. For the last two years we have paid a teacher to teach Paulo. Now that he is better, he wants to go to school with other kids. Paulo will also be on the cover of the new book Towards an HIV and AIDS Competent Church, which will be published later this year.

Neljä vuotta sitten hoidimme Babirye-vauvaa parin kuukauden ajan kotonamme. 5kk vanhana hänen äitinsä kuoli Aidsiin. Babirye oli hyvin sairas ja lähellä kuolemaa; hänet testattiin myös Hiv-positiiviseksi. Lääkärit aloittivat ARV-lääkityksen, autoimme hänen koko perhettään antamalla heille uuden kodin. Saimme viestin helmikuun lopulla, että hänen isänsä Salonko oli kuollut Aidsiin. Nyt kaikki sisarukset ovat mummon ja sukulaisten huollettavina. Babirye matkusti mummonsa kanssa meitä tervehtimään. Koko pitkän linja-automatkan hän oli laulanut ankole heimon kielellä: ”Ayi Yesu,oje ompeke ayi mugongo! Minun Jeesukseni, kannathan minua selässäsi!” Taivaan Isämme on antanut Babiryelle terveitä päiviä viimeisen neljän vuoden aikana. Olemme kiitollisia Babiryen elämästä, joka on lahja Jumalalta. Reppuselkämatka jatkuu…

16.04.2009 allekirjoitettiin yhteistyösopomus Fida Internationalin ja Caring Handsin välillä. Caring Hands sai myös kutsun tulla helluntaiherätyksen kesäkonferenssiin Keuruulle ensi juhannuksena myymään tuotteitamme ja esittelemään toimintaamme. Mukaamme on myös kutsuttu kaksi ugandalaista Caring Handsiin kuuluvaa naista. Olemme kiitollisia näistä kunnianosoituksista.Fidan toiminnanjohtajalta Rauno Mikkoselta tuli seuraava viesti: ”Fidan hallitus hyväksyi yksimielisesti Caring Handsin ja Fida Internationalin välisen yhteistyösopimuksen eli ratifioi sen kokouksessaan 13.5.2009. ”

14-15.05.2009 saimme Kampalan kansainväliseltä koululta (KISU) kaksi ryhmää kolmasluokkalaisia, joille oli hiljattain koulussa opetettu luonnonsuojelua ja kierrätysmateriaalien käyttöä. Opettajan luettua paikallisesta lehdestä artikkelin Caring Handsin toiminnasta, he ottivat yhteyttä nähdäkseen käytännössä, kuinka paperihelmiä tehdään. Jokaisella heistä komeili itsetehdyt helmet kaulassa kolmen tunnin vieralun jälkeen.

2008 investoimme pitkän harkinnan jälkeen suuren summan yhden orvon unelman toteuttamiseen tulla lentäjäksi. Koimme, että tähän poikaan pitää satsata. Patrick sai lentolupakirjan ja nyt hänen tavoitteenaan on tulla liikennelentäjäksi. Patrick tutustui toiseen lentäjäoppilaaseen, joka oli kosketettu Patrickin elämäntarinasta. Tapaaminen CH:n kanssa järjestyi ja kihlattunsa kanssa he rohkaisivat meitä tekemään anomuksen HIPS/USAID ohjelmaan. 22.05.2009 allekirjoitimme sopimuksen HIPS/USAIDin kanssa, joka tukee organisaatioita, jotka auttavat orpoja ja hädänalaisia lapsia. Lahjoitus on melkein kaksi kertaa suurempi, kuin mitä sijoitimme Patrickin kouluttamiseen. Ilman Patrickin kontaktia, emme olisi tietäneet koko ohjelmasta. Sijoituksemme toi siunauksen.

Paulo voi hyvin. Hän lähtee oikeaan kouluun! Koko elämänsä aikana hän ei ole sairautensa (Hiv-positiivinen) tähden jaksanut kävellä kouluun. ”Olen harjoitellut kävelemistä ja pystyn kävelemään koululle noin 2km”,  kertoi Paulo meille viime vierailumme aikana. Pari viimeistä vuotta olemme kustantaneet kotiopettajan Paulolle. Nyt hänen terveytensä on parempi ja hän haluaa mennä tavalliseen kouluun muiden lasten joukkoon.  Paulon kuva komeilee uuden kirjan kansikuvassa:”TOWARDS HIV AND AIDS COMPETANT CHURCH”, joka ilmestyy myöhemmin tänä vuonna.

In partnership with USAID we began a football (soccer) program for orphans on Saturday July 25^th.

In the front yard of a church in Mutungo, a large group of enthusiastic football players awaited our arrival. There were about 130 kids aged 3-18. It was great to see the girls involved also.

They were divided into groups according to their ages. This produced animated play and for the youngest we improvised with songs and other games.

The children and adults were eager and it will be great to follow it up next Saturday.

The good fortune of Nakakawa Rose’s family.

Saturday the 25th was a great day for Nakakawa Rose’s five member family. About 2 months ago, Caring Hands helped the family move from a wood shack into nicer, roomier accommodations. Now they received a large bunk bed, linen, mattresses, food, and lastly (but not least), love. The four daughters and the mother were full of thankfulness and joy.

After a long illness, Rose Mary is slowly recovering and is able to return to her old business of selling vegetables, fruits and banana leaves.

We are still making beads; the designs are developing. Help is seen in little things.

Caring Hands is not standing still. There is no lack of imagination among the ladies and their families. The beads can be seen even in Nazziva Prossy’s shoes.

A year ago, baby Loice was a very sick girl. Through the assistance of Caring Hands, she has recovered and is growing into a robust little lady. This is noticeable when comparing a photo of the girl a year ago and now.

This is how it is here in Uganda.

USAID:n kanssa aloitettu orpoja avustava projekti pyörähti mukavasti käyntiin jalkapalloilun muodossa 25.7. lauantaina.

Mutungossa sijaitsevan kirkon etupihalle kokoontui suuri joukko innokkaita jalkapalloilijoita meidän saapuessamme paikalle. Lapsia riitti liki 130 ja ikäjakauma liikkui 3-18 välillä ja mikä ilahduttavaa jalkapallo sai liikkeelle myös tytöt!

Eri-ikäisiin lapsiin jaetuissa ryhmissä tapahtuma eteni pienestä pallottelusta hurjiin pelitilanteisiin ja ihan pienimmille oli tarjolla improvisoitua laulu- ja leikkitoimintaa.

Lapset ja aikuiset olivat innoissaan ja tästä on hyvä jatkaa tulevina lauantai-iltapäivinä.

Nakakawa Rose Maryn perheen onni.

Lauantai 25.7. oli suuri päivä myös Nakakawa Rose Maryn 5 henkiselle perheelle. Noin 2 kuukautta sitten uuteen kotiin lautahökkelistä perheensä kanssa muuttanut Rose Mary sai tuntea Caring Handsin auttavat kädet hyvin konkreettisesti ison kerrossängyn, liinavaatteiden, patjojen, ruoka-avustuksen sekä viimeisenä, mutta ei vähäisempänä, lähimmäisen rakkauden muodossa. Neljä tytärtä ja äiti olivat niin täynnä kiitollisuutta ja iloa!

Pitkään hyvin hyvin sairaana ollut Rose Mary palailee nyt pikkuhiljaa oman bisneksensä pariin myymään vihanneksia, hedelmiä ja banaaninlehtiä.

Helmiä rullataan, mallit kehittyy! Apu näkyy pienissä!

Caring Hands ei pysähdy paikoilleen! Helmentekijä naisilta ja heidän perheiltään ei puutu mielikuvitusta! Paperihelmet löysivät paikkansa myös Nazziva Prossyn kengissä.

Baby Loice oli vuosi sitten tavattoman sairas pikku tyttö. Caring Handsin avulla hänestä on kasvanut vanttera emännän alku. Tämä on helppo huomata kun katsoo kuvaa tytöstä nyt ja vuosi sitten.
